Augusta, GA: A New Adventure

It didn't take our family long to start exploring the Augusta area. Leave it to me to find a waterfall...

So far, so good!

We are really enjoying what the Augusta area has to offer.

You see, we came from a city with a population of 29k that literally had one place to shop: Walmart. As for restaurants, don't get me started...

Here in Augusta, it's a little, big-ish city at 200k, and that's not including connected surrounding cities, like Evans, Grovetown, Martinez, etc,. It has EVERYTHING. Every store/restaurant we can imagine is here, and more often than not, there's at least two of the same within a few miles. The only thing I feel it's missing is a Jack-in-the-Box, Del Taco, Trader Joes and an Ikea within an hours' distance.

What's especially weird about this place is that you can assume you are in Augusta, but it may actually be Martinez, or vice versa. I still don't know where boundary lines are, and after asking my new hair dresser last weekend, apparently locals do not either! I seriously thought the school we enrolled our kids at was in Martinez, but it actually is listed as Evans. The house we are under contract for (next to the high school the kids are at) states Martinez on our paperwork, yet popped up as Augusta when I scheduled a appliance delivery today. Who really knows where we are at any given moment?

What I do know is that Washington Road leads you to anywhere, and if you follow Belair long enough, you'll hit post, gate one. Oh, and Bobby Jones Parkway is ALWAYS a bitch, no matter time of day.

While we were still living in the hotel (for the first two days/nights) we already began to feel cramped. So I looked up Phinizy Swamp, after having read about it prior to our arrival, and there we went.

This protected swamp land is gorgeous! Once there, you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. It was the first place I ever laid eyes -in person- on Spanish Moss.

*I stupidly left my good camera at the hotel. Pics taken on the ol' iPhone 11.

We really enjoyed this nature preserve and plan to go back. However, a few days ago it made local news: a chemical spill in the area has it currently closed. Hopefully it will re-open sooner than later, and more importantly, I really hope the chemical spill didn't endanger the wildlife. Humans suck.

Two weeks ago we became bored in the AirBnB. So once again, I referred to my prior research and we headed to Savannah Rapids. And stupidly, again, I left my Nikon behind. This was somewhat intentional, just because the photos on Google didn't wow me, thus I figured why bring my heavy camera. DUMB.

The Savannah Rapids area is basically a complex of trails along the Savannah River. There are pavilions for rent, bikes/canoes/kayaks for rent, and quite a lot of people walking and biking about. I think I love this place more than the swamp!

We have tons more to see around here and are just getting started. I am hoping we'll hit up the art and the history museums this weekend, but we'll see if time permits. My daughter also has an I-Spy downtown Augusta project for her history class, which excites me more than her!

Stayed tuned for all of that soon.
