Who knew that one small-ish town in Germany would hold so many titles for "The most..."
Ulm has been a planned day trip for awhile now. If you actually follow along with my little blog, you'll notice I give hints as to where we'll be next. It was in my last Edinburgh post that I mentioned we'd soon be visiting something known for being tall.
Well, weather had been a factor since then.
Boo.
Hiss.
Until this past Saturday...
Ulm, Germany: A typical German town located in lower Bavaria, bordering the state of Baden-Württemberg.
Ulm is not highly touristy, but draws people in for the same reasons we visited: It has some of the "World's Most..." locations within one city!
Let's start with the most well-known first:
World's Most Tallest Church~ULM MINSTER
Ulm Minster is a Gothic wonder for one BIG reason: It is the world's tallest church!
The tippy top of the steeple from the ground measures at 530 feet high.
To put it into an American perspective, it's 'almost' half the height of the Empire State building.
For a church, that's pretty darn tall.
A fun fact: Ulm Minster is not a cathedral, though many people call it as such. It doesn't seat a bishop therefore it is not officially considered a cathedral.
Another fun fact: When La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain is completed, it will knock Ulm Minster down a notch from it's current "Tallest Church" place. *If you're curious about La Sagrada Familia, we've been there and done that! See my archives for July 2015.
Visitors are welcome to climb up the 768 steps to the top for a nominal fee of €5. I fully intended to do as much, but we arrived a bit later than planned and had a few others things to see before we needed to head home.
The inside of the church is pretty, but aren't they all? There is nothing extremely exceptional within the interior that we haven't seen before (in my humble opinion), but still worth a peek inside.
I personally liked standing on ground level and looking up the tiny hole in the ceiling at what it the steeple staircase. Also, the wood choir stalls near the main alter were pretty neato.
From the church, we headed to our next "Most" location within the city:
World's Most Crooked Hotel~Schiefes Haus
I don't know a whole lot about the 'Crooked Haus', but it sure was crooked, and adorably so!
The house turned hotel sits in an area called Fisherman's Quarter where cute medieval houses perch along a small river. Definitely worth the stroll if you find yourself in the area.
Before jumping into the car to head towards our third "World's Most" location, we did a bit of wandering. I had heard about the colorful Rathaus (city hall) of Ulm and it's astronomical clock, so I had to pay a visit while in the area.
Honestly, this Rathaus could possibly be "Germany's Most Colorful Rathaus" in comparison to the many others we have seen!
It was time to head to the car, but I have to mention that Ulm has one last claim to fame with "mosts".
Ulm is the birthplace of one of the world's most intelligent beings to ever walk this planet:
Albert Einstein.
Sadly, his birth house was destroyed during WWII.
Last stop of the day was technically not in Ulm, but across the river in a tiny suburb of Ulm, 5 miles away.
WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL LIBRARY
Alright, well it may not be the World's Most beautiful library, but it's high up there on the list!
Beauty is a very subjective term, and no, there isn't an official record of this being "the most beautiful" because one doesn't exist, but I'm going to go ahead and say that this is definitely the most beautiful library I have ever seen, so it fits the theme of this post.
Something tells me that one of my impending travel locations may change my mind about this one. We'll see.
I loved every nook and cranny of this lovely library located within Kloster Wiblingen, and will make a stand alone post about it soon. There are a few interesting tidbits about it, and a ton more photos, too.
After the library, we drove into the sunset and headed home. While Ulm was not the most exciting adventure we've had in Germany, it was worth the day trip to see some of the "most" random things!
Our next big adventure will keep us in Germany, but take us to another "most", although I will spare you and NOT use the word "most" in that future post.
Looking forward to the views...!
