This town has found a place in my heart. Touristy? Oh, yes, that's undeniable. It's so lovely, and quaint that you could care less about swarms of tourists while visiting.
I had originally wanted to visit Rothenburg during the Christmas season for the wildly popular Christkindlmarkt that it hosts, but didn't get the chance. So I picked this random Saturday, and finally got it done!
Rothenburg Ob Der Tauer (not to be confused with other cities named "Rothenburg" in Germany) is about 1.5 hours from my house. The drive there is mostly autobahn traveling, which is less stressful than the crazy back roads we often encounter.
Rothenburg is small, which may be part of the reason I love it. Everywhere you look, there is color, timbered structures, and beautifully crafted hotel and shop signs. The city is enclosed by a fortification wall that gives it that fairy tale appeal that it's well know for. If you've read some of my past posts, you know that I am a sucker for fortification walls!
I definitely plan to come back to Rothenburg for sure during Christmas time, at least once!
It's a well known, little gem of a town, and I cannot wait to return!

I had no plans in this town, except to wander aimlessly. Having no plans is sometimes the best plan! We weaved in and out of the main streets, visiting little shops, stopping and taking pictures of randoms. Everything is so cute here that you feel compelled to photograph it all. Although I did feel that way, I didn't go too snap happy. I am learning to enjoy my surroundings sans photo ops, plus photos can only paint so much of a scene, anyway.
After hanging out inside of the fortification walls, we decided to explore the outer parts of the walls. There are many gate entrances to Rothenburg, so it's easy to find an exit.
Spitaltor Gate:
You can explore the innards of the round large structures attached to the gate. It's all cobbled stone walkways, dark, with exposed wood beams. Apparently this gate was built for defense, and it is clear to see why.

Probably the most famous is the Burg Gate or "Burgtor" gate. It has a few names....This gate is picturesque! It screams "Take a photo of me!" I was a little sad that the flowers hadn't bloomed just yet, but it was still a pretty area. I have to go back when trees have leaves, though. It's late March in Bavaria, and although spring has officially begun, you wouldn't know it by photos!
