Halloween in Germany

I have always wanted to do a badass family themed Halloween, and never could conjure an idea that everyone in the family would agree upon.
Last October is when we found out that we'd be moving here, and shortly after learning about our impending move, a Halloween family theme came to me as I was watering the flowers in front of my house:
Garden Gnomes.

I've always been a bit obsessed with garden gnomes. I've had them in my yard since I have had a yard of my own. Every new place we move to, the gnomes move as well; nestling themselves within a new flower bed, or along a new hedge.
So that day, watering my end of season flowers, there they were. Staring up at me with their cute little grins. I had a million other things about moving going through my mind, because the idea of Germany was so fresh, but it randomly smacked me: Garden gnomes originate from Germany, we're moving to Germany, Halloween, and bam, the idea was born.

Because of everything else that would continue to keep me busy throughout the year following my gnome idea, I didn't spend much time making the costumes. I bought the fabric shortly after moving here, and started to work on them about 2 weeks ago. The beards and belts for the boys were the hardest part.

But now, I present to you, our garden gnome family!

Not bad for a family of six gnomes with two weeks of off and on work/sewing. I have never sewed or designed a man's tunic out of thin air before. That was a first. I fell a bit short on yardage for the girls skirts, which was a bummer, but I managed. I wanted them to turn out a bit fuller. Oh well. If you know me, I don't sew with patterns, so unfortunately I can't share one if someone in blog land is wanting to request a brand or pattern number, sorry.
All of the materials and notions totaled $109 bucks from the good people at Fabric.com. You can't even buy a crappy costume at a big department store less than $20 per person. Taking a moment to thank Fabric.com for shipping APO and in a lightening speed fashion! Companies that ship APO are good in my book, and I can speak for many folks when I say that the military appreciates this more than you know.

Halloween trick-or-Treating on post was a major success! People stopped to take photos of us. It was odd! We posed for photos, mocked 'humans' that called us elves, and even gnomed a little bit. Gnoming is, well, acting like a gnome would. My husband, the large papa gnome, scared many little kids while 'gnoming'. It was great!

I don't know if I can top this year's Halloween costumes, but I have always wondered how it'd feel to be a gnome for a day, and now I know. Dreams come true on Halloween!
